On trips, I’m a notorious over-packer. I love to over-prepare and dream up all sorts of situations I could find myself in:
What if I’m invited to a fancy beachside restaurant by a vacationing investment banker?
What if I’m working in a cafe then want to head to the jungle for ziplining?
What if there’s a chilly night that’s not technically chilly but I’ll be cold because I’m so used to the hot weather by then?
Domestically and on road trips, this habit is passable; if I stuffed a few unworn outfits into my carryon on a weekend getaway, it’s not a big deal. Internationally, it’s harder to get away with. Two summers ago, on a 6-week long trip to Spain and Turkey, I packed five pairs of shoes into my suitcase, including a pair of wedges. I wore two of them (not the wedges). I had to send my wedges–along with a couple skirts, a dress, and one of two jackets I brought–back home, which set me back a pretty Euro. I was a little better in November for my 12-day Costa Rica trip, when I limited myself to one backpack. Cut to now, when I’m preparing for a trip that will last at least three months. I am driving myself insane.

I know, I know: Everyone says to take what you’re packing and put half back in your closet. Screw that, this is as bare bones as I get. I did a pretty good job, no? Anything I missed that I should include? Or something I should definitely leave out?
Ack. I’m an overpacker myself, so I am of no help! 🙂 Good luck!
